Old Testament prophetic tradition
When preparing for our Friday class, think about
-the meaning of the words "concept" and "symbol."
-what symbolic actions can you think of?
-Give examples of symbolic actions in Christian traditions / other religious traditions. What do these actions mean?
Read the biblical texts from the Assignment #1 and deduce the meaning of the word prophet. What was the role of the prophet in the Hebrew society? What in your opinion are the most prominent characteristics of the prophet?

for Monday, Aug. 30, 2004: read the assigned books of the prophets. In class each of you will present his or her assigned text. Be prepared to comment on
- the content of your piece (the same format as our class discussions).
- the form of the text: language, composition, addressee.
- the genre/tone of the narrative (vision, story, petition, proclamation, evocation, prediction, threat).
- the instances of prophetic symbolism if any.
- peculiar characteristics of the prophet found in the text.
You will be given about 2-3 minutes to introduce your piece/prophet.
