ND Code of Honor

THE HONOR CODE

I expect you to adhere to the standards set forth in the Notre Dame Honor Code. If you are in any way unsure of your responsibilities under the Honor Code, please see the following web site: http://www.nd.edu/~hnrcode

Here are some specific guidelines for this course.

1. You should complete all quizzes without consulting any outside sources (textbook, dictionary, reference work) and without any help from another individual. All work on these exercises should be solely your own. The same standards apply to the final, with the exception that you may use a dictionary.

2. You may consult with other students regarding the Russian-language essays and oral reports as long as you adhere to a few simple rules.

A. It is always permissible to consult with other students to review general grammatical concepts, for example, which case to use after a certain verb or preposition, which participle to use in a given situation, and whether imperfective or perfective aspect is called for in a certain context. You may also have another student give you advice on a small number of specific problems (one or two) in your paper or report. (For example, is this ending hard or soft? How is this word pronounced?) However, you should not have another student proofread your paper or help you with more than one or two specific questions about grammar. The ideas advanced in the paper/oral report should be solely your own.

B. You should not ask a native speaker for help on these assignments.

C. Make sure you attribute ideas that are not your own to their author and properly cite material taken from other texts. (See comments about Format and Style below.)

4. All work on the English-language essays (midterm, final) should be your own. You may ask another student to give you feedback on your thesis, but this should not go beyond a general conversation about the topic, and you should be able to present your ideas in depth. In other words, you should not ask another student to help you turn your vague idea about a text into a full-blown thesis. Make sure you attribute ideas that are not your own to their author and properly cite material taken from other texts. (See comments about Format and Style below.)

5. If you are unclear about whether certain forms of consultation are acceptable, please ask me.
